If Chris Cagle were nothing more than a man who lives life at full-speed, taking corners on two wheels, he would still be one of country music's more interesting characters. There aren't many in the industry that can put passion and energy on stage the way he can.
"For me, getting on the stage is where we get it all back-- the high-energy, excitement and the thrills. As long as there are people who want to forget their week, who think they see some piece of their life in these songs, who want to have a good time, there's nothing better in the world than being on that stage. It's intense. It's a rush and the best feeling in the world," says Cagle.
After moving to Nashville in 1994, the feisty Texan waited tables and tended bar while working to improve himself as a songwriter. He was soon signed to a publishing deal and later offered a recording contract with Capitol Records Nashville. He quickly broke onto the country music scene in 2000, with his debut single and video "My Love Goes On and On" that perfectly showcased not only his vocal and songwriting talent, but also his dynamic no-frills stage presence. His in-your-face country style quickly attracted the attention of music fans nationwide and within no time, he had his own cult of fans who simply refer to themselves as "Cagleheads." His debut album Play It Loud also produced his first number one hit, "I Breathe In, I Breathe Out," as well as the hit singles "Laredo" and "Country By The Grace Of God." His second album, Chris Cagle debuted at #1on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart and spawned two more Top 5 hits, "What A Beautiful Day" and "Chicks Dig It." Both albums were certified Gold by the end of 2003.
In 2004, doctors ordered him off the stage and out of the recording studio due to a medical problem with his vocal cords. After several months of much needed vocal rest, a rededicated Cagle went back into the studio to record what would become the most important release of his career, Anywhere But Here.
"You're coming back from a vocal rest and (if) you don't come back with a strong record, all of a sudden people in radio may look at it as a sign of, 'maybe he's not going to make it back,' " says Cagle. "There are people who don't recover from that kind of a stall in their career."
After an 18-month hiatus from country radio, Cagle's fears where put to rest when Anywhere But Here was released in October 2005 and garnered the country star‚s biggest sales week ever. It has since become his fastest selling CD to date. The debut single "Miss Me Baby," soon became another hit for Cagle; marking the eighth time he has hit the Top 40 with a song he has written or co-written.
His latest single, "Wal-Mart Parking Lot" has just been released and is a tale about coming-of-age in a small-town. "This song was a no-brainer when we decided to record it, as it seems to explain exactly how it was for me growing up in Baytown, TX," says Cagle. The single is striking a chord with both fans and critics alike. "Wal-Mart Parking Lot" jumped 13 spots on the country singles chart just one week after its debut. Billboard Magazine raves, "'Wal-Mart Parking Lot' has that Everyman kind of appeal, and Chris Cagle's smooth, effortless delivery gives it an easygoing charm. It is a quintessential small-town portrait that will make listeners smile and nod. After all, what says country these days better than the Wal-Mart parking lot? It is a good song and a solid performance that should add up to a perfect fit for country radio."
The accompanying video was recently filmed during a live concert and captures the live performance magic that has made him such a fan favorite. Look for the video to debut soon on CMT and GAC.
Refocused and rejuvenated, Chris Cagle is back on stages selling-out concerts across the country, bringing his fans everywhere the kind of electrifying country music for which he's become synonymous.
